Ken Blacktop Gentle "When Cotton Was King" Please join Ken Blacktop Gentle, Marilyn Orlandoni, Donna Chambers, June Wilson Maxey, Linda Angio & Bailey Jack as they capture the essence of "When Cotton Was King"in this exhibit of multi-media work. Each artist brings a different perspective with their work to a time when cotton was a driving factor of the American economy in 1830s & 1840s. It was a golden age of luxury for many and a time of hardship for others. This exhibit captures the joy and despair of the time.
“When Cotton Was King” By C. Angelea Taylor My mother picked cotton with fingers that were as nimble then as they were gnarled when she was older. She probably wore a sun bonnet to shield her face from the sun and she washed her hair in well water. Summer vacation started when it was time to pick cotton and ended when the crops were brought to harvest. Her dreams as a young girl never reach fruition. She married a milkman and raised five children who were definitely not the Brady Bunch. But she said she could never give any of her children away and that nothing could ever replace my father. Not even that eight grade education she always wanted, when cotton was king. With Permission "When Cotton Was King", Copyright © 2014 C. Angelea Taylor, All rights reserved.
